Drivers 'can not live without their cars'

According to research from the AA, 82% of motorists still enjoy driving and 79% could not live without their car.

The survey of 18,547 members also revealed that 2% of women and 3% of men would dump their spouse rather than their car.

Drivers comply with smoking rules

A government study has found that almost all business drivers and their employers are complying with laws banning smoking ban in vehicles.

A report for Smokefree England found almost total compliance was across vehicles and the workplace - although a self-employed man was found "dumbfounded" by the penalty after being recently fined for smoking in his van.

Cost fears deter fleets from going green

According to a new survey, smaller fleets are put off going green because they perceive it as expensive.

More than 70% of companies with fleets of up to 100 vehicles rate having a green fleet as important or very important.
This figure is not matched by a keenness to invest, as 56% are not prepared to allocate any budget.

Do biofuels have a future?

The publication of an independent review of the government's biofuel plans have caused the future of biofuels to be thrown further into doubt.

The review found that the government's target that 10% of all transport fuels must be biofuel by 2012 is too ambitious and needs to be reconsidered.

Fleet managers concern for environment grows

"85% of organisations surveyed found reducing overall environmental impact to be a concern, yet 41% of respondents still so not include an environmental strategy in their fleet policy."

The poll for Abbey Mortgages has shown that people are tightening their belts because of rising prices, and it's having a major impact on how much we drive.

Government has back-tracked on planned fuel duty hike

Chancellor Alistair Darling has announced that the proposed 2p/litre fuel duty rise will not take place in October as planned.

"The global credit crunch and sharp rise in world oil prices have pushed up prices at the pump," said Darling. "Today's decision will help motorists and businesses get through what is a difficult time for everyone." (You'd never guess there was an important by-election coming up)
