The release of the first official photos of the new Volkswagen Amarok, clearly show that Volkswagen have created a vehicles with an extremely impressive presence.
The new Amarok has been designed to capture the practicality of a commercial vehicle whilst delivering the power and performance of a multi purpose vehicle along with a hint of prestige and comfort. From the facts and figure that follow it seems that Volkswagen may have achieved the above.
The Amarok sports a generous payload capacity of up to 1.15 tonnes and maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes. Its 2.52 m² cargo area has the largest dimensions in its class at 1,555 mm long and 1,620 mm wide, plus a best in class width between the wheel arches of 1,222 mm, which means that for the first time on a mid-size pick-up, it is possible to load Euro pallets sideways, saving on space.
It is clear to see that the frontal feature of the Amarok is a combination of styling features from the latest models of the transporter and the Golf. It is 5.25m long with a ladder frame chassis and will be offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive and switchable or permanent 4 motion all-wheel drive which can be engaged using one button.
A rear differential lock is also available to spread the drive to 40:60 to the front and rear axles for excellent vehicle dynamics and high traction for use on rugged terrain.
There are a number of new features built into the new Amarok such as the Electronic differential lock (EDL) and off road ABS which shortens breaking distances in off road conditions or on gravel roads.
At speeds under 20mph hill descent assists is automatically activated to control hill descents by using selective braking interventions. The new ESP Plus system which includes hill hold assist which prevents vehicles from rolling backwards on hills until the driver applies power with the accelerator.
On the release date there will be two main engines made available, the first being a 2.0 litre fuel-efficient, Euro 5 complaint, common rail TDI engine producing 163ps and 400 Nm of torque at a low 1500rpm. The second engine available will be a 122ps with a maximum torque of 340 Nm from 2000rpm.
Both engines have a six-speed manual transmission and will have impressive fuel economy with low emissions to make the Amarok the first all-wheel drive pick-up in this class offering CO2 emissions of less than 200 g/km.
Like the new Transporter and Caravelle, the Amarok has a gear change indicator to help drivers achieve the best fuel economy, which with an 80-litre fuel tank should offer a range of over 600 miles.
The interior of the Amarok is said to be class leading, offering a large amount of headroom and a more leg room which has been compared to the interior cabin of the Volkswagen passat for comfort and spaciousness. The rear has three seats making the Amarok a fully functional 5 seater with folding rear seats for increased storage space if needed.
Overall the Amarok seems to have captured a new concept of vehicle and said to be leader in its current class due to the technology, build quality and practicality of the vehicle as well as its ability to be tailored to suit the needs of each individual customer.

This new Volks is perfect for my brother's rough road activities. He's now in Dallas resting from his geological profession while his pick-up is still out for dent repairs. This trim fits perfectly with his interests and his profession, and the features are so like him; tough, sleek and macho.
