The What Van? Awards 2007 announced two major manufacturers as winners of their two prestige awards.
The Editor's Choice award for 2007 was the Volkswagen Caddy DSG with the Van of the Year award 2007 going to Iveco's Daily.
More and more manufacturers are offering the van operator an alternative to the conventional manual gearbox as an extra-cost option. Many are favouring automated manual gearboxes. Nobody, however, has come up with a solution that is quite as novel or quite as effective as Volkswagen's DSG. It is so impressive that it's a worthy winner of the What Van?Editors choice award for 2007. The initials stand for Direct Shift Gearbox, a six-speeder, so it can be used either as a manual or as an automatic and is marked as an option in the Caddy van. DSG makes use of two wet clutches, in effect turning it into two gearboxes rolled into one.
Now we come to the winner of our van on the Year Award 2007 which was the Iveco's Daily. Before now people were doubious about the build quality and felt that the vehicle lagged behind much of the competition, however, today's Daily is well-constructed and is gaining a reputation for reliability that matches or exceeds that of its rivals. These are amoung the reasons why it has won the top accolade for 2007. Last year saw the rear-wheel drive Daily undergo a host of revisions including all new exterior styling and a redesigned cab interior. There have been changes under the metal too, including a re-jigged, fully independent, front suspension system, bigger brakes and a strengthened van cargo box. All these alterations have worked, and worked well.
